AP KRAS KRAS GENE MUTATION ANALYSIS by Idylla™

About This Test

Why is this test performed?

KRAS Gene Mutation Analysis is performed to detect clinically relevant mutations in the KRAS gene within tumour tissue specimens. KRAS mutation status is an established biomarker in the molecular characterisation of several solid tumours and may provide information relevant to therapeutic decision-making.

KRAS testing is commonly requested in patients with:

  • Non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC)
  • Colorectal carcinoma
  • Pancreatic adenocarcinoma
  • Other selected solid tumours where KRAS status may be clinically relevant

Results should be interpreted in conjunction with histopathological findings, clinical presentation, and other molecular biomarkers where appropriate.

About This Test

Why is this test performed?

KRAS Gene Mutation Analysis is used to look for changes (mutations) in the KRAS gene, which may be present in certain cancers. These genetic changes can provide important information about a tumour and may help doctors better understand its characteristics.

Your doctor may recommend KRAS testing if you have been diagnosed with, or are being evaluated for, certain types of cancer, including:

  • Lung cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Other selected cancers

The results may help your healthcare team determine the most appropriate next steps for your care and treatment planning.

FAQ

Q. What is the KRAS gene?

The KRAS gene helps control normal cell growth and division. Changes in this gene may contribute to the development of certain cancers.

Q. Why has my doctor requested this test?

Your doctor may request KRAS testing to learn more about the genetic makeup of a tumour and obtain information that may support treatment planning.

Q. What sample is needed?

The test is usually performed on a tumour tissue sample that has been collected during a biopsy or surgery.

Q. What do the results mean?

The results provide information about whether a KRAS mutation is present in the tumour. Your doctor will explain how the findings relate to your individual condition and treatment options.

Taking a Tests

Q. Can I walk into the outpatient lab for a blood test?

If you have consulted a doctor and the clinic has provided you with a completed laboratory request form, you may visit our outpatient labs for a blood test. Patients must produce the completed laboratory request form in order for us to proceed with the doctor's orders.

If you have not consulted a doctor, please do so. As blood test results are best interpreted with clinical findings and family history, you should seek a doctor’s advice so relevant tests for your condition are appropriately analysed. Besides visiting your family physician or specialist, you may wish to have the tests done at any of our Parkway Shenton Medical Group clinics located island wide. Or you may also opt to have tests done at Executive Health Screeners, located within our hospital premises.

After your consultation with the doctor, the clinic will assist to complete a laboratory request form and you may have your blood samples drawn either at the clinic or at one of our outpatient laboratories.

Q. How long must I fast if required?

If the tests you are doing require fasting, you should fast for at least 12 hours after a normal meal.

Q. Can I drink while fasting?

You can drink plain water during the fasting period

Q. Where can I go for my blood to be drawn?

You may visit us at any of our outpatient laboratories during office hours with a Laboratory Request Form signed by your doctor.

Test Result

Q. Where can I get my laboratory report after a blood screening?

Your laboratory report will be sent to your doctor when completed.

Q. Can test results be sent to me directly?

Test results will only be released directly to the physician who ordered the tests. This is because test results need to be reviewed in consultation with a physician for an in depth explanation and interpretation of your results.

Q. Who should explain to me about my laboratory results?

Laboratory results should only be interpreted together with clinical findings and family history, therefore your doctor is the best person to interpret your laboratory results.

Q. How soon can I get my results?

Different tests have different turnaround time for the completion of the tests. It can range between an hour to 14 days. Please check with your doctor.

Payment

Q. My doctor has asked me to pay for my blood tests at the laboratory. What mode of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, major credit cards and NETS.
