Test ID: Screening for vaginosis (Affirm VPIII)

Test Name:
Screening for vaginosis (Affirm VPIII)
Test Code:
VP1
Specialised Test:
No - Clinical
Turnaround Time:
1 to 2 days upon receipt of specimen
Test Schedule:
NA
Test Type:
Panel
Additional Test Note:
DNA hybridisation probe test

Results and interpretation

Test results will be reported as:

  • Candida sp. positive/negative
  • Trichomonas vaginalis positive/negative
  • Gardnerella vaginalis positive/negative

Simultaneous detection of more than one type of micro-organism is common.

A positive result means nucleic acid of the respective micro-organism is detected and signifies candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, and/or trichomoniasis when consistent clinical signs and symptoms are present.

Limitations

Optimal test results require appropriate specimen collection. Use only ATTS and follow the instructions for use strictly (Appendix A).

This test should not be used as a test for therapeutic success or failure.

The presence of G. vaginalis, although suggestive, is not diagnostic for bacterial vaginosis. Although G vaginalis is present in almost all patients with symptomatic infection, the organism is detected in up to 50-60% of healthy asymptomatic individuals. Hence, assessments should not be based on a single test result but should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory findings.

Microbial Identification test for use in the identification and detection of:

  • Candida species
  • Gardnerella vaginalis
  • Trichomonas vaginalis
Sample Requirement:

Ambient Temperature Transport System (ATTS)

Specimen collection is a critical step for accurate test results. Vaginal specimen must be collected via BD AffirmTM VPIII Ambient Temperature Transport System (ATTS) to ensure specimen quality during collection, storage and transport. Refer to Appendix A for instructions on use of ATTS.

Specimen should be sent to the laboratory as soon as possible, or within 24 hours after specimen collection if delay is expected.
