Specialised Test: No - Clinical
Collect a small scoop of stool (or about 2mL of watery stool) in a clean, screw capped container with the attached spactula. Please specify patient's age.
According to the latest (Infectious Diseases Society of America) IDSA publication, multiple stool specimens are rarely indicated for the detection of routine stool enteric bacterial pathogens by culture. One stool sample for paediatric patients and no more than 2 stool samples for adult patients may be considered for culture tests. The second stool sample from adult patients are to be sent on a separate day and only if clinically indicated. The scope of limited yield provided by additional specimens can be discussed during prior consultation with an ID Physician or the microbiology laboratory (Tel: 6248 5854/6).
In patients with onset of diarrhoea after 3 days of hospitalisation, sampling stool for culture is not useful unless a physician has been consulted for culture testing. Instead, consideration should be given for the C. difficile toxin test to be conducted using stool.
