Test Type:
Single Test
Additional Test Note:

Clinical Diagnostic Significance of testing Carbapenemase in CRE by PCR: Carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) is the bacteria that is non-susceptible to carbapenem antimicrobials and/ OR are documented to produce Carbapenemase (CP) via mobile genetic elements, thus known as CP-CRE (Ref: CDC Guidelines). The multi-drug resistant organisms such as CP-CRE have serious patient safety and treatment implications due to the limited therapeutic options available. Their propensity for spread further underscores the importance of rapid and active detection of CP gene.

Enterobacteriaceae  bacterial isolates which are CRE positive by culture, can be directly processed to detect CP gene, by  rapid and accurate Carbapenem-Resistant  Organism (CRO) PCR Test – XPERT.

The CP genes that can be rapidly detected are blaKPC, blaNDM, blaVIM, blaOXA-48, and blaIMP gene.

Test Order Procedure: The test can be ordered, through SCM for inpatient cases or via our laboratory request form for outpatient cases for CRE culture positive samples. No additional sample is required as the pure CRE isolate will be taken directly from culture.

Cut off time: Place the order within one day of receipt of the CRE culture report (as the longer storage of bacterial culture may change the characteristic of isolate and may compromise test results).

[NOTE: These guidelines have been integrated into CRE positive culture reports for ease of ordering]
